  America Bashing

  with all of the america bashing going on of late, i thought i'd mention the fact that america stands for freedom, as flawed as our system may be.

  you're even free to be critical of the government and it's leaders.

  the many men and women who have died defending this country did so to preserve the rights even of people who hate the u.s. there are many different cultures here, so there are many different attempts at creating laws for the land.

  There is a good deal that is good and beautiful about the United States. There is much that is sick and nasty. That is true with all countries. What bothered me about the original post about "America bashing" is that its author started waving the flag and making remarks that are offensive to others. There are a number of other countries in which there is more social equality, in which the living standards of ordinary people are better, and in which there is more respect for the lame, the halt and the blind. And for an American to make the remarks that Jed, or whatever his name is, did without knowing about these other countries is both naive and somewhat insulting. Yes, America is in many ways the greatest (most powerful) nation the world has see. However, like every other nation, there is a lot that needs improving about it.

  Honor among exJws

  hello all......some things that have happened during the past week have made me think about exjws and honor.

  we all remember 'theocratic warfare' and how it is ok to lie to those who don't deserve the truth.

  so, my question is.....are exjws as a group more dishonest than people from other religious groups?

  It is quite true that ex-JWs are not united in any way except that they have all had the same background. But that background has had a serious impact on most. Personally, I think that many exes are not a very healthy lot because of their experiences, and I do not think that most are very attractive people. While there may be a few saints among exes, the majority are rather sad. The anger and bad manners that are often diplayed on this forum do not say much for exes. Of course, one can blame this on the Watchtower, and with some justification, but not all.

  The WatchTower is God's Word

  sitting thru the watchtower study yesterday with my stepson, i noticed something i'd missed while reading the study article myself a few days ago.. without having a wt present i'll quote as best i can and hope someone can find me a direct quote.

  in the third study article the society quotes deuteronomy 6:4-9 which says in part, and these words which i command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sin in your house, and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise.

  This quote tells what both the Society and most JWs think. Really, there is nothing new in this. The Watchtower Society and its flunkies become more and more like the Church of Rome every day. Hence tradition and the teachings of the "Mother Organization" (Holy Mother Chuch) become as valid as the Scriptures. Of course most Witnesses don't know very much about their own teachings. The other day and elder came to my door. He didn't know I was a "black apostate." So I asked him a number of questions. He denied that the Society was responsible for the whole 1975 business (wow!) and when I asked him to explain the date 1914 to me, he said he'd have to do some research. I have to admit, however, that he wasn't quite as dumb as the Mormon elders the LDS send around.

  Why going 'door to door' this week felt so good!

  yes that's right, i actually went door to door this week!!.

  well okay, not trolling for new dubs but as a collector for the national kidney research fund.. earlier this year i'd done the same thing for marie curie cancer research.. let me share a few things i've learned.. most people were genuinely pleased to see me at their doorstep - can you imagine how alien that felt?.

  they were pleasant, willing to chat and, with few exceptions, donated to what they could see were worthwhile causes.. i would return home after collecting with a feeling that i had actually accomplished something.. someone, somewhere at some point in time might actually benefit from the time that i, and many other volunteers, put into this charitable work.

  I have gone from door to door for a variety of reasons since leaving Jehovah's Witnesses. Though I was accused of being against the preaching work, and was supposedly attacked for that, the fact was that I never did feel it was wrong. What I did say was that there was no biblical requirement to go from door to door and that it wasn't very effective. What the Witnesses don't realize is that the preaching work (and particularly the door-to-door work) is practically a sacrament to them. Of course tyhe biblical basis for it is less than paper thin. Unfortunately too, it keeps the Witnesses from doing other, more meanigful works of mercy.

  The Watchtower and the Masons

  the latest edition of the free in christ ministries journal contains a very interesting article entitled the watchtower and masons.. drawing upon material from the book the watchtower & the masons by fritz springmeier, it gives the following parallels between the things that c t russell believed and those taught by the masons:.

  * both believe jehovah is the most important word being the basis of their dogma, and the name of their god.

  * both believe god yielded power to a lesser god.

  Fritz Springmeier's book is the sort of thing which should never have seen the light of day. Springmeier knows less about the the Masons than he does about Jehovah's Witnesses. I also see that he has been arrested as a member of some right-wing militia. He is evidently into pot as well, which is not surprising from what he is written. Even if Russell were a Mason, which he wasn't, so what? The idea that Masonry is some evil cult is pure BS. Masonry grew out of the European Enlightenment and was used as a vehicle to promote liberal ideas and democracy. It was hated by the Catholic Church and by Hitler because both feared it for that reason. Masonry today in the English-speaking world is harmless. Only goofy fundies and old fashioned Catholics attack it today.

  Of course the Witnesses have some ideas like those of the Masons; both were influenced by ideas that were (and are) all over the place in Russell's era. Frankly, I am sick and tired of the misinformation that goes out from a number of idiots who simply won't pay attention to what sound evidence is. Russell said he never had been a Mason, and in reading his statements about Masonry, it is quite evident that he wasn't.
